RADIO FOR EVERYONE, CREATED BY YOUNG PEOPLE
FairTunes is working with Inspired Radio based in Ashford, Staines to bring youth radio to the local community. Commissioned and supported by local housing association A2Dominion we have also gained funding support from 02 Think Big and Surrey County Council.
>The project began in the summer 2012 and was part of A2Dominion’s ‘Be Inspired’ project which helps young people to prepare for work and further education. Working with WEAREBANG, FairTunes trustee Kary Stewart set up and ran a three month long FM radio station with the group, broadcasting to Ashford, Staines, Sunbury and Stanwell. Inspired Radio also teamed up with local youth music organisation The Soundhive to produce and stream showcases from local bands.
Inspired Radio is now award winning! Inspired Radio students won the Spelthorne and Runnymede Education Business Partnership Award for Enterprise and Innovation. Alistair, Joe, Oliver and Ben and their teacher Mr Davy, entered the award competing with over 200 other students from the local area. Inspired Radio gives participants aged 14 to 25 the chance to find out how a radio station is run, and broadcast to an audience of around 6,000 people. Topics focus on issues affecting young people, such as work, education, relationships and money matters. This next phase will see local youth workers and mentors gaining the training to run the station themselves.
